Introduction

Listen up boys and girls! It's time to travel back in time to one of the funkiest eras that ever existed. We're referring to the 70's, and more specifically: disco fever! Yep, it's time to dust off those bellbottoms and get those roller-skates out because it is to party. Below you'll find a couple of tips on preparing the ultimate disco fever party in your very own home (or venue of your choice). But first, let's have a look at the history of our "Disco Fever" theme.

Most of us associate disco fever with films like Saturday Night Fever, Krush Groove and many more. But did you know that the name "Disco Fever" was actually the name of a dance club in the South Bonx, New York City? It's doors were first opened by Ally Abbatiello in 1976 and was intended to be an adult disco. But Ally's son, Sal, had other plans.

It was in 1977 that Sal convinced Ally to give him the disco which he quickly converted into a place for a young, more energetic crowd. As with any club, the popularity largely depends on the music being played and also the identity of the DJ responsible for playing it. And it was for that reason that Sal teamed up with none other than the legendary club DJ, Grandmaster Flash.

Since then, many other famous musicians, groups and DJ's performed at the Disco Fever club, including the Beastie Boys, Run-DMC, the Crash Crew, Sequence, the Sugar Hill Gang, and many, many more.

Oh, and just by the way, it was Ally’s wife – Sal’s mom – that came up with the name “Disco Fever”.

Disco Fever Design

The Disco Fever design invitation is by far the easiest and least expensive of them all. For this you’ll only need a computer loaded with the appropriate software, the necessary computer skills, a printer and some glitter as well as confetti/taffeta. For those who don’t have a printer, have your invitations printed at your local printing firm.

Now here’s what you’ll have to keep in mind: the 70’s had their own unique fonts and images types at the time. Using them will only add to that original 70’s feel.

To start off you’ll need an image – either from a clipart library, scanned or downloaded (with permission) – that reflects the main element of the Disco Fever theme. This will either be someone striking a dance pose or a disco ball. Once you’ve got your image, simply position it on your invitation template and edit it as necessary. Colors to be used include yellows, browns, greens, pinks and light blues. Remember to fill your invitation with the details listed above.

Once you’re done, decorate your invitation with the glitter or confetti to make it look like an authentic 70’s invitation.

Disco Ball Necklace

Miniature disco balls are available from most online disco merchandise retailers as well as most party stores. Get your hands on a couple of them as well as a number of chains. Be sure to get chains in an appropriate color so that the two will match.

Once you’ve got all you need, simply attach the disco balls to the chains as well as invitations that you’ve made your self or bought in a store. Once again, remember to include the details above.

Should you want to put in a little bit of additional effort, make (or buy) a couple of boxes for your disco ball necklace invitations and stuff it with confetti or streamers before laying your invitation on top.

Disco Top Hat

The disco top hat invitation is one that is sure to impress your guests. To make this invitation you’ll need to purchase a top hat for each of your guests. These needn’t be expensive and can be found on the internet or in stores that stock them. Additionally you’ll need some glue, glitter of various colors and store-bought or self-made invitations.

Once you’ve got everything, start by covering the exterior of the top hat with a thin, even layer of glue. Next, sprinkle the top hat with the glitter. You can either use one color per hat or mix and match as many colors as you want.

When your hats are done and the glue has dried, simply attach your invitations (completed with the info above) to the inside of the hat.

Disco Fever Party Dress Code

The dress code for your Disco Fever party requires little explanation as we’ve all seen examples of it in films like Saturday Night Fever.

For the gents it typically requires a 70’s style suit complete with jacket, 70’s style collar shirt, bellbottom pants and comfortable shoes. Remember that they used to wear collared shirts back then with the first two or three buttons undone.

As for the ladies, well, anything goes really but you’ll be a hit in a tight-fitting t-shirt, boots or shoes and tight-fitting bellbottom pants. Additionally, there are also 70’s style suits available for women.

Disco Fever Party Decorations

Decorating your party space for the 70’s should be no trouble at all as it simply requires a disco ball or two, poufs, a couple of neon signs and of course a dance floor. Additional items that can be used for decoration include 70’s themed table decorations.

Disco Fever Party Guest Arrival & Announcement

As people were seldom announced at the Disco Fever club, you’ll simply need to introduce your guests to one another. However, should you feel an announcement is necessary, simply use something along the following lines, taking care to replace the names we’ve used with those of your guests:

“Everyone, may I have your attention please? Please Welcome George and Sarah from Wyoming!”

Disco Fever Party Favors

For the ultimate disco party favors, simply make a trip down to your local disco merchandise retailers or shop on the internet. Remember that party favors are usually things intended to act as ornamental keepsakes to ensure that your guests remember the grooviest party of their lives for years to come. If you’re stuck on ideas and haven’t used those we’ve specified under our invitations, feel free to use them as party favors without attaching the invitations.

Disco Fever Party Activities

This is the best part of the evening and is something that everyone of your guests will look forward to. Remember to keep disco music playing the whole night long. These include artists like the Bee Gee’s, Gloria Gaynor, The Village People, The Beastie Boys and many more.

Disco Dancing

What else is the purpose of a Disco Fever themed party than an opportunity to pull some flashy moves on the dance floor? Ensure that you’ve got your disco ball spinning and the lights dimmed while your guests pull their best Pulp Fiction moves!

Disco Fever Scene Reenactment

While some prefer to dance the night away, others prefer something a bit more challenging. Satisfy them both by thinking of a couple of famous scenes from 70’s disco movies. As mentioned above, Pulp Fiction is one. Another major hit was Saturday Night Fever.

Be sure to have the camera ready as this will be an event you and your guests will never ever want to forget.

Disco Skating

For those who’re looking for a different type of disco, we’ve got the perfect solution: Disco Roller-skating at an appropriate skating rink. Those with their own skates need only bring them; those without will be able to rent them from the booth at the venue.

Again, this will provide a number of excellent photo opportunities, so be sure to take your camera along.

Fevered Musical Chairs

Why not be a kid again by playing a disco-themed game of musical chairs? Get the music pumpin’ and let your guests strut their stuff, but as the music stops they’d have to find a chair, and quick too! Those left standing are, quite naturally, out.

To spice things up a bit (yes, another great opportunity to have your camera ready), have your guests wear their roller skates while playing musical chairs.

Food & Drink

The foods and drinks they had back then are mainly those we still eat today. So to keep with the theme of your party, place a plaque by each of the food trays that will have a Disco Fever name for that type of food. An example here would be “Jim’s Groovy Burger” or “Alan’s Funky Chicken”.
