Introduction

For those Barbie fans out there, this party will be the very thing to supply you and your friends with times good and memorable. Below you will find all the tips and information you need to organize the successful event with ideas relating to invitations, decorations as well as party activities - so be sure to get your pen and paper ready. Before we start, however, just a little background info on Barbie.

Just in case you didn't know, the Barbie doll's full name is actually Barbara Millicent Roberts and Ken's full name is Ken Carson. Both of these names come from Barbie creator, Ruth Handler's own children's names. It was in fact Barbara, Ruth's daughter, that first gave rise to the idea of creating the Barbie doll: as Ruth watched Barbara play with her infant-like dolls, she noticed that they were often assigned grown-up roles.

The idea finally took form when Ruth and her children went on a trip to Europe in 1956 and encountered a German doll named Bild Lilli, which already had an adult figure and was well known for portraying adult roles. Ruth immediately bought three of them, giving one to Barbara to play with and taking the other two with her back to the United States where she presented them to Jack Ryan (an engineer) who would help to remodel the doll. It has to be said that Ruth's husband, Elliot, was one of the co-founders of the Mattel toy company, which naturally helped the idea along from conception to the final product.

The first Barbie doll was released at the American International Toy Fair in New York on March 9th, 1959 - a date that has now also become the Birthday of the Barbie doll.

And that being said, it's finally time to get to the organization of our Barbie party!

Barbie Party Invitations

And remember, including the following information in your invitation will ensure that your guests will have all the information they need.

Barbie Design

This is by far the easiest and cheapest invitation to make. All you will need for this invitation is a computer and a printer. If you don't have any of these, be sure to ask someone who has if you can use theirs. In addition, it is recommended that you use a template for your invitation as the layout will otherwise be a bit tricky.

Now, to start off you will have to compose a suitable design for the front page of your card. The ideas are endless, but what you could do is to dress up like Barbie, have your picture taken and edit it so that it looks exactly like Barbie, but with your face. And instead of using the name “Barbie”, you'd be able to use your own in that well known Barbie font.

However the choice is yours; all you will need to do is ensure that you have a suitable design for the front page of your card along with your party name. The details of your party will then come on the inside or flip side.

Once you are satisfied with the entire invitation, print a couple of tests on some fine glossy paper to check if the final product is the way you imagined it. If so, simply print off the rest of the details and get ready to deliver them.

Barbie Wigs

Who wants to be Barbie? Well, we're sure that you and most of your friends want to be Barbie (although a real life version) at least some of the time.

As such why not make it happen for your friends by looking in the appropriate shop in your area or on the Internet for a Barbie wig for each of your friends? When you have found the wigs, all you will need to do is create a small card-based invitation as described above in the Barbie Design and attach it to the wig. Remember to include all the necessary details so that your friends will have all the information they need to attend your party.

And when everything is done, simply get ready to deliver them!

Barbie T-Shirt

This is not only an invitation, it is a marvelous keepsake as well! What you will need to do is get a blank T-shirt for each of the friends you plan to invite (so be sure to get all their sizes first). When you have the t-shirts, you will need to think of an appropriate glittering design for the front to reflect the theme of your party and an according design for the back that will have all the invitation details.

Once you have the designs, simply take the T-shirts to your local screen printer (or if there isn't one in your area, simply have a look on the Internet) to have the designs printed on the T-shirts.

And finally, when you have the finished product in your hands, it's time for delivery!

Barbie Party Dress Code

You might think that the dress code for a Barbie party will be easy, but it could be quite tricky. As you know there are hundreds if not thousands of different types of Barbies. As such you will first have to decide whether you will be having a general Barbie party or a themed Barbie party. Whatever you decide, be sure to state it under the 'Dress Code' section of your invitation (e.g. “Barbie” for general Barbie parties or “Malibu Barbie” for a themed Barbie party).

Barbie Party Decorations

Once again, you will first have to decide whether you will be having a general Barbie party or a themed Barbie party. But, we've put our heads together and come up with a couple of ideas for that party – whether general or themed – that you can use. If you're not able to make these items, then be sure to check in the appropriate store in your area or on the Internet.

  • Barbie Plates & Cups

  • Barbie Tablecloth

  • Streamers

  • Balloons

  • Party Sign (Make your own big party sign using the appropriate colors and the Barbie font)

  • Barbie Banners

Barbie Party Activities

Barbie Films

Did you know there were Barbie films? We're sure you did and have probably seen them all. But if you want to get all your friends in the mood, then why not rent or buy a couple from your local DVD store or from the Internet?

This will make for a couple of hours well spent with some of your best friends doing something that you all love. So if you're planning to do this, be sure to get the popcorn and the soft drinks ready before the event.

Barbie Theater

Seeing as you and your friends all love Barbie, why not entertain each other with a Barbie show? Here's how it will work:

You will have to make a stage where you and your friends can tell a story using your Barbie dolls, very much like a puppet show or a Punch & Judy show. Once you have the stage, be sure to decorate it with items that you and your friends will be able to use as props. In addition you will have to ask your friends to bring their own Barbie dolls or have a couple of your own at the ready.

On the day of your party you will have to divide your friends into groups (groups only as big as there are dolls to be used on the stage) and ask each group to write a small story that they will be able to act out with the Barbie dolls on the stage you made.

Give everyone sufficient time to think of a story and to discuss it among themselves before starting the activity. And when it's finally show time, ask your mom or dad to record the different shows (using a video recorder) and also nominate a winner.

Barbie Tag

For this activity you and your friends will have to nominate one person to be the “IT” person, also known as the impostor Barbie. And as you may know, impostor Barbies all want to be real Barbies.

Now, the game starts off with the impostor Barbie trying to tag any of the real Barbies (the remaining participants). Should the impostor manage to tag one of the real Barbies, they then become the impostor and the previous impostor becomes a real Barbie. In addition, when tagged, the new impostor Barbie must wait five seconds before she can start trying to tag someone else.

Life Size Barbie

This is a fun activity, but might get you and your friends a little dirty, so be sure to have some play clothes ready or even aprons. In addition, you will have to have a fair amount of paper mache ready as well as some paint, a wig, perhaps some clothes, etc.

Now the purpose of this activity is to make a life size Barbie using the paper mache and all the other items. Just in case you didn't know, a Barbie doll is one sixth actual size, which will make her about 5 feet 9 inches.

Food & Drink

When all the films have been watched and you're tired of playing Barbie tag, there's one thing everyone needs to keep them going for the rest of the party, and that's food & drink! So what do you think Barbie would be eating? As you may know Barbie has been linked with food giants such as Chuck E. Cheese's and McDonald's. As such, use the list below if you can't think of any appropriate foods for your Barbie party:

  • McDonald's Burgers & Fries

  • Sandwiches (decorate them with Barbie flags pendants made from cocktail sticks and paper)

  • Chips & Dip

  • Candy

  • Salads

  • Chicken wings

  • Pizza
