Introduction

Hey boys and girls! It's that time of the year again - party time! And if you're a baseball fan too, you'll love this party. Yes, our current theme is baseball and we're going to give you a couple of tips to help you make your party a success. But first, a little bit of history on America's favorite past time.

Did you know that Baseball originally came from England? Yes, it's true - it evolved from all the other bat-and-ball games like rounders and cricket which were already popular games in England during the 18th century. It was in fact the English and Irish settlers that brought the game to America where it evolved into the game that we all know and love today. But of course, if you haven't heard of baseball yet then you are probably wondering how the game is played, right?

Well, the purpose of the game is to score as many home runs as possible. This is done by the batter hitting the ball as hard as possible when it is thrown by the other teams pitcher. But, the batter is not only supposed to hit the ball, he is supposed to run through all four bases (arranged in a large diamond shape) until he gets to the home base again.

At any one time there are 18 players playing - 9 on the field and 9 doing the batting. The teams switch as soon as an inning is over, which happens when there are three outs in the batting team or when all nine players have batted. There are nine innings in a game of baseball.

Incidentally, did you know that in American league baseball there's an additional member to the team? Yes, indeed – it's the person who bats for the pitcher! This is of course from major league baseball where even the pitchers have to take their turn to bat.

Baseball Cap

For this invitation, ask your parents to help you buy a baseball cap for each of the friends you want to invite. You will also want to make a baseball invitation card for each guest you want to invite. Remember to include all the details as listed above so that your friends will have all the information they need.

Once you have all the items together, attach the invitation card to the cap using a pin or anything of your choice. If you are having any trouble with this, ask your parents for help. Once done, get ready to deliver them to all your friends.

The Golden Ball

Another easy invitation to make, this one will simply require the use of some golden paint and a baseball for each of the guests you want to invite which you and your parents can get from any sports retailer in your area or online.

Once you have the balls, paint each one of them along the seam, taking care to retain the color of the seam. You might want to do it in halves to ensure that one half dries before you do the other half to avoid marks on the paint job. Once they're painted and dried, use a pen and write the details of your party on them. Remember to include all the appropriate details.

Baseball Patch

For this invitation you will need the help of your parents as it might require a little money and the services of someone capable of making baseball patches in your area. If you don't know of anyone locally, ask your parents to look on the internet.

Once you have found someone that will do the job, pick a suitable design for your invitations and remember to include all the details.

Baseball Party Dress Code

There's only one thing people wear to a baseball party, and that's a baseball uniform. Be sure to remember to include this on your invitation so that your guests will know what to wear. If they don't have baseball uniforms, you can just state “Baseball Clothes” which means they can wear their normal clothes but with a baseball cap or a baseball shirt of their choice.

Baseball Party Decorations

Right, now we're getting to the fun part – decorations! Here are a couple of ideas that you can either make yourself or ask your parents to buy from the appropriate shop:

  • Baseball posters

  • Baseball shirts (mount these against the walls)

  • Banners

  • Flags

  • Bats

  • Balls

  • Bases

  • Baseball games playing on the television (with the sound muted)

In addition, make up some stats for each of your guests which the sportscaster will be able to read to everyone present.

  • Baseball balls

  • Baseball bats (miniature)

  • Baseball Caps

  • Baseball Shirts

  • Baseball Cards and/or Stickers

  • Baseball Pennants

  • Baseball Posters

Baseball Party Activities

Grounded Baseball

This is baseball with a twist that will see you and your friends hop around the baseball pitch like a bunch of rabbits.

While the rules of the game stay the same, there are a couple of differences: everyone has to stand on one leg and instead of pitching the ball, the pitcher must roll the ball to the batter. As soon as the batter hits the ball, he must hop to the first base on one leg. Those doing the fielding will also have to hop on one leg to get the ball.

Silly Baseball

Again, baseball with the normal rules, but not with the normal players... Have you ever wondered, if animals could play baseball, which of them would be the best at it? Here's your chance!

Each player must say which animal they are going to be before the game starts and only one of a kind animal is allowed in any game. Once the game starts, all players have to act like their animals for the duration of the game.

Slow-motion Baseball

A normal baseball game, but everything has to happen in slow motion! See who can have the most dramatic attempts at catching and running... in slow motion.

Basketball Baseball

This is an excellent game to play and simply requires a plastic baseball bat for each of the players and a very light plastic ball (the same size as a basket ball). The aim of the game is to get the ball into the hoop, but by hitting it – no touching allowed!

Ask your parents to be referees and take care not to accidentally hit any of your friends as plastic bats can still hurt.

Tag the Runner

This is a game of speed that will require a lot of athletic agility. Here's how to play the game:

Pick someone who's reasonably fast, but not the fastest out of everyone (so that everyone has a fair chance). Now, place two markers on the ground a hundred feet from each other. The person who was picked has to stand in the middle, between the markers. All the other players have to stand behind one marker.

The object of the game is to run from the one marker to the other one without being tagged by the person in the middle. As soon as someone is touched, they have to join the person in the middle and try to tag all the others who cross the field to the other marker. Once there are no more people left behind the original marker, the game starts again with someone else being in the middle.

Food & Drink

As you may know, professional baseball players are actually extremely healthy, meaning that they don't eat any junk food. But since you're still young, that might still be fine. Here are a couple of foods that you will typically find at a baseball game:

Foods:

  • Hotdogs

  • Chips & Dip

  • Burgers

  • Nachos

  • Tacos

  • Popcorn

  • Peanuts

Drinks:

Sodas, sports drinks and water.
