Introduction

Many of us know dinosaurs through the films such as Jurassic Park and King Kong and often marvel at their size and their enormous teeth! If you are one of those with a love of all things prehistoric and big, then this is the party for you. Below you'll find a number of tips - which you may use and change at your own will- to help you organize the best dinosaur-themed party. But before we get started, let's have a quick look at these ancient monsters.

Dinosaurs lived between 230 million years ago in the Triassic period until about 65 million years ago at the end of the Cretaceous period. And just in case you were wondering whether all dinosaurs lived at the same time, then the answer would be no, they didn't. In fact, the gap between the extinction of one type of dinosaur and the arrival of another is often far greater than the disappearance of the last dinosaur before man arrived. Examples of this can be seen in the time difference between the extinction of the Stegosaurus and the arrival of the Tyrannosaurus. But although interesting, we're guessing that it's not exactly what you want to know, right?

The thing most kids want to know is who was the biggest, strongest and meanest dinosaur to ever roam the earth. Let's have a look:

The tallest dinosaur was the Brachiosaurus which stood at a record length of 38 feet tall and weighed up to 60 tons. However this is completely dwarfed by the length of the longest dinosaur, the Diplodocus which had an amazing length of 89 feet. Now it has to be said that the aforementioned species only hold these titles because enough fossil evidence had been obtained to support these facts. However there are suspicions that there were even longer and larger dinosaurs, such as the Argentinosaurus which clocked in at about 100-110 tons and the Supersaurus which is suspected to be 112ft in length. Until this is proven, however, no one can honestly say for certain. The only thing we do know is that they were all herbivores and were all sauropods.

As for the meanest... well, we all know that the T-Rex was one of the meanest, but then there was definitely some competition in that arena too. Where the T-Rex measured 43ft in length and weighing about 7 tons, the Spinosaurus had an average length of 55 feet and weighed up to 9 tons. Now, that just leaves the fastest dinosaur which was the ostrich mimic ornithomimids and is said to average a speed of about 25 miles per hour.

In conclusion, it has to be said that in terms of size, speed and strength most facts are based in fossils and therefore remain pure speculation.

Caveman's Invitation

To complete this invitation you'll simply need to get your hands on a couple of flat rocks. In addition, you will be needing a bit of chalk or even crayon.

Using the chalk or crayon, write the details of your invitation on the flat rock and adorn the borders of the rock with caveman images. Remember that cavemen couldn't really speak English and sometimes not that bright, so it would be best to adjust your vocabulary accordingly. Here's an exmaple:

You Caveman Jim.

Me having party Joe's Caveman Rumble.

At day 20 of next moon, when sun set.

At my cave.

Wear caveman clothes.

Pterodactyl Egg

To make this invitation you will need some paper mache and as many balloons as there are invitations you will need to make. To start off, inflate the balloons to an appropriate size. Now although pterodactyl eggs were in fact much bigger than even an ostrich's egg, you needn't make them actual size (as your friends might need a wheel barrow to cart them around then). When your balloon is inflated to an adequate size, simply apply a couple of layers of paper mache (and remember to shape it to look like an egg) until you think it looks right. When they have dried, decorate them in an appropriate fashion and remember to include your party invitation details.

Caveman Invitation Card

Using a computer and a printer, design a nice dinosaur-themed card. Ideas for this type of design include a couple of your favorite dinosaurs on the front along with some of their interesting facts and then, of course, the details of your party on the inside/flip side of the card.

Dinosaur Party Dress Code

The dress code for this party largely depends on what you and your guests will want to come as. If you are thinking about coming as dinosaurs, then you might have to ensure that all your friends will be able to afford the suits. Should you feel like coming as cavemen or paleontologists, then simply state either “Caveman” or “Paleontologist” on the dress code of your invitation.

Dinosaur Party Activities

There’s nothing like a good party activity to ensure that a great time is had by all. Below are a couple of ideas which you can use and change as you want to suit the purposes of your party.

Caveman Loot!

For this game you will need quite a lot of running space and divide into two groups or tribes. You and your friends will also need to select an item to be used as treasure for the duration of the game.

When you're ready to begin, each tribe has to set up a cave at a certain location away from the view of the other tribe. It is then the mission of the one tribe to retrieve the treasure from the other tribe. But be careful, just stumbling in might not be such a good idea! Do some reconnaissance and devise a clever plan to lure the opposing tribe out of their den.

To make the game more interesting, use some water balloons to drive the intruders away! Those that get hit, have to remain inactive for a period of 5 minutes.

Caveman Tag

Using an area large enough to run in, select one individual to be the "IT" caveman. He or she then has to stand in the middle of the playing field and shout "Ugh! Ugh! Ugh! Caveman!" At this stage all players have to run from the one side of the playing area without being tagged. Those who get tagged also become "IT" cavemen and have to help the first "IT" tag the other participants. The first person being tagged is the original "IT" for the next round.

Body Part Ball

This game simply requires a ball and will require all the participants to line up next to each other. One person should step forward with the ball and face the line of friends.

The person with the ball has to yell out a body part like "Hands!" or "Head", etc. and then throw the ball to anyone in the line. The person the ball is aimed at has to return the ball to the thrower by hitting (or kicking, as it may be) it with the appropriate body part.

Whoever does the wrong thing or misses, is automatically out of the round. And, as such, the winner is the last person remaining in the line.

Dinosaur Quiz

To play this game you will be needing a quiz set. These simply consist of questions and answers and can be obtained from any toy store or from the internet. If you are not in a position to buy a quiz set, simply go down to your local library or do some research on the internet to make your own.

This game can be played where players try to answer questions in teams or on their own. As quiz master it is your duty to decide before you start playing and also to keep score once the game has started.

Food & Drink

Get a little creative with your food and drink by giving it prehistoric names. Here are a couple of our ideas:

Foods

  • T-Rex Pizza (A pizza with some hot peppers or chillies)

  • Brontosaurus Burger (A huge burger with some extra onion rings)

  • Caveman's Special (A massive club sandwich)

  • Lizard's Innards (A taco)

  • Diplodocus' Dinner (A salad)

Drink

Take the time to make some weird concoctions and give them interesting names. Ideas here include mixing different kinds of sodas to create a “Caveman's Ale” drink or some chocolate milk to create “Muddy Water”.
