Thinking about
having a disco-themed party? If so then this party is especially for
you as we'll give you some information and tips to help you organize
one of the best disco parties for kids there ever was! Below you will
find all the tips you need, so be sure to keep a pen and paper ready.
But first, a little more about the disco era.
If you ask your parents about Disco, they will tell you that it's an era that emerged after the Vietnam War and that had its musical origins in the 1960s with hits such as "Mony, Mony", "Only The Strong Survive", "Soul Makossa", etc. But back then it wasn't yet known as "Disco". The term was first used by writer Vince Aletti in the Septermber 13 edition of Rolling Stone magazine in 1973. The article was entitled "Discotheque Rock '72: Paaaaarty!" and from there became known as "Disco".
During the late 1970s and early 1980s, disco had boomed to such a degree that there were discotheques and night clubs in almost all the major U.S. cities where disco music was played. This naturally also gave rise to the DJ as it was during this era that DJs were hired or contracted by clubs to play the thumping music all night long. From there the scene evolved quite a bit and saw a reemergence during at the turn of the millennium.
And that being said, it's now time to
organize a disco party that will ensure that your friends have the
best time of their lives! So get your Afro, your sunglasses and
something to take some notes with and let's get organizing!
Below you will find some useful ideas for Disco Party invitations. Should you require any of the materials or items necessary, just ask your parents to help by purchasing them from a retail store in your area or from the internet. And remember, including the following information in your invitation will ensure that your guests will have all the information they need:
Party Name: Give your party a name to go with the theme like “Alexandra's Funky Disco Blast”
Salutation
Date & Time
Venue/Location
Dress Code
Contact Details
Additional information…
To make your disco design you will simply need a computer and a printer. If you don't have a printer pay a visit to your local printing company or ask a friend if you can use theirs.
Using a template for your disco design
(available in most word processing programs or from the internet),
select an image that you would like on the front of your invitation
and combine it with the name of your party (the latter in a suitable
font). When that's done, all you need to do is add the details of
your party to the inside of the invitation and the appropriate
decorations. That being done, all you will need to do is to get them
printed and get ready for delivery.
As the disco ball is the ultimate symbol of the disco era, pop down to your local disco supply store or even have a look on the internet. In many instances miniature disco balls come in the form of key chains.
When you have your disco balls you will
need to make the appropriate invitations. If you need help on this,
just have a look at the Disco Design above. Once done, simply attach
the invitation to the disco ball and get ready to deliver them.
Everyone will need something to drink if they have been dancing for hours without end. As such, why not make your friends a nice healthy smoothie as an invitation?
Go down to your local green grocer with your parents and pick out enough of the kind of fruits you think will make a good smoothie. If you don't know which fruits to get, just have a look on the internet for some smoothie recipes as they are plentiful and freely available in most cases.
Once your smoothie recipe is sorted out, you will also need to get some empty smoothie containers. These can usually be obtained in bulk from your local home ware bulk supply store. If you don't have one in your area, just have a look on the internet. Now, as a final step you will also need to make some cool labels. Use a computer program for this purpose to include the necessary party details along with the appropriate decorations.
When everything is done, just pour the smoothie into the containers and adhere the labels. It's as simple as that!
All you'll need to state on your
invitations under “Dress Code” is “Disco”. If you or your
friends don't quite know what that should look like, then just enter
the word “Disco Clothes” into your favorite search engine and
have a gander at the results.
Stuck for some true disco party decorations? Well, you will most probably only need to ask your parents for some ideas as they were probably young back then themselves. However if you are still stuck for ideas, here are a couple of ours (which you will be able to get from the appropriate local retailer in your area or from the internet):
Disco ball – A disco party wouldn't be complete without one!
Disco plates & cups
Balloons & Streamers – these were popular back then and are still a big hit at any party
Tinsel wigs – have these lying around for your guests to wear
Disco dancer piñata
Disco tablecloth (very bright with all the colors of the rainbow)
Disco lanterns
No formal announcements needed here, a
simple greeting and introduction would do. What you could do,
however, is to have a bowl of M&M's ready at the door. Each guest
then has to guess the amount of M&M's in the bowl. The person who
guesses the closest, wins the bowl (be sure to make a note of
everyone's answers).
To ensure that your guests remember
your party for days, weeks, months and even years afterwards, get
your hands on party favors that you know they will enjoy. Here are a
couple of ideas, all of which can either be found at the appropriate
retailer in your area or on the internet.
Disco Glasses ('70s shades)
Key Chains
Mini Disco Balls
Tinsel Wigs
Disco Kits (complete with Afros, mustaches, etc.)
Mini Disco Ball Light
Fiber Optic Lights
The soul of any party is the party
activity. And, as such, for a disco party you will need the
appropriate activities to ensure that a good time is had by all.
Below you will find a couple of ideas which you can change as you
wish to suit your party needs.
It's a disco party, therefore there must be disco dancing! Ask your
mom or dad for a couple of their old records. If they don't have any,
ask them to help you buy them from your local music retailer or from
the internet. Here are a couple of bands that were popular back in
the day:
The Jacksons
Donna Summers
The Bee Gees
Abba
Boney M
To add a little spice to the event, watch a couple of disco movies
before you dance so that you will know which moves to pull on the
dance floor.
Feel like a bit of singing? Why not ask your parents to rent a karaoke machine with all those classic disco hits for the event?
On the day of your party, take turns with your friends to sing and
dance along with some of the most popular tunes of the disco era.
Nothing will give you and your friends a better background when it comes to disco than a couple of disco movies.
Ask your parents for help with titles or just ask the attendant at
your local DVD store. Alternatively, use the internet to search for
movies you think will suit the purpose.
Disco is all about the music, and so is musical chairs! For this game you will need to have a number of chairs equal to one less than the total amount of participants.
Now, the game is played like this:
When the music starts, everyone has to dance in disco style around the chairs. As long as the music is playing, everyone has to keep on dancing, but when the music stops, everybody has to grab a chair. The person who can't find an open chair, is out. Before the music starts again, everyone has to again form a circle around the chairs and one chair has to be removed, so that there is again one less chair than there are participants.
The winner of the game is obviously the
person who gets the last chair.
As for disco food and drink, you only need to get what you and your
friends feel like as just about all the foods we love today, were
loved back then as well. Here are a couple of ideas:
Burgers
Hot Dogs
Cupcakes
Cakes
Apple Pie
Pastries
Chicken Wings
Pizza
And as for drinks, the same applies:
Milkshakes
Fruit Juices
Sodas
