It's almost time again for Halloween, and, as you may well know, the scariest party of the year where you and your friends will be able to put on your most sinister costumes and run around collecting candy. Below you will find some party organizing tips to help you along with yours and ensure that your event is one that your friends won't be forgetting for a long time. But, before we start, just a little more on the tradition of Halloween.
Now what you probably didn't know is that Halloween used to be a celebration of the end if the harvest season for the ancient Celts. This was known as Samhain - a period not only of festivities, but some creepy superstitions as well. First and foremost among these is the belief held that the barrier between the land of the living and the land of the dead was at its thinnest on the 31st of October, which, as you know, is the day on which we celebrate Halloween. It was on this day that the living chose to employ a number of tricks to ensure that they were safe from the dead.
Running around with scary masks or hanging skeletons from the front door (or placing them in the window sill) - these aren't new customs. The ancient Celts believed that by looking like those from the land of the dead on 'All Hallows Even' (Halloween), they would avoid curses that would otherwise cause them and their crops ill health. In addition, their windows were often decorated with the bones of the dead as a sign of respect with the hope that the dead would pass them by. But there was one other thing that they used to try and ward off the dead or evil spirits, and that was by making a bonfire. And not just any old bonfire - it was one into which all the bones of the livestock they slaughtered (in preparation for the coming winter) were thrown.
Now, you're probably wondering if there
was any truth in this, right? Well, to answer that, just consider
that we never actually ceased the tradition of Halloween. But
nevertheless, it's a time to party and that's what we'll be doing
right now! So get your pen and paper and start making some notes for
the ultimate Halloween party!
Be creepy and spooky with your
invitations this Halloween! Below you will find some of our ideas for
invitations which you can use as you want. Should you require any of
the items or materials mentioned, ask your parents for help to get
them from the appropriate retail stores in your area or the Internet.
And remember to include the following details on your invitations:
Party Name: Give your party a ghoulish name. Think in terms of “Jack's Feast of the Dead” or “Jenny's Witch Party”
Salutation
Date & Time
Venue/Location
Dress Code
Contact Details
Additional information…
This is a simple party invitation that will simply require a parchment for each of the guests that you wish to invite as well as a seal and sealing wax. Once again, if you need any of the items, ask your parents to help you get them from the appropriate local retailer or from the Internet.
Once you have all the items, use your computer to design your invitations. As this will be a scroll, you will have to decorate the area around your text with all manner of skulls and bones. Remember to include all the above details to ensure that your guests have all the information they need.
When all has been done, print the invitations onto some parchment and roll them into a scroll. Use the sealing wax and seal to seal your invitation (ask your parents for help in case you might scald yourself with the wax).
For added authenticity, ask your
parents to help your singe the edges of the scroll.
What you’ll need to do here is buy a couple of fake skeletons, one per guest you wish to invite. These can easily be bought off the Internet or from the appropriate local supplier.
Next you want to make an invitation, very much like the one mentioned in the Dead Man's Scroll invitation, though if you don't feel like making the whole Dead Man's Scroll, you can change the idea.
When finally you have all the skeletons
and the invitations, simply attach the latter to the former and get
ready to deliver them!
Did you know that there's a tale associated with the Jack-O'-Lantern? Indeed, and here it is:
Long ago in Ireland there lived a man called Stingy Jack, a farmer with a couple of nasty habits which included getting drunk, greed and gambling. Upon a day Old Jack tricked the Devil into climbing a tree and carved a cross in the trunk of the tree once the Devil got caught in the branches. Subsequently the Devil couldn’t get down and was, quite naturally, rather upset. To reward Jack for his evil deed, the Devil cursed the man, condemning him to walk the earth, only at night, for the rest of his days with naught but the light he was carrying with him… a hollowed turnip with a candle inside.
For this invitation you will have to lay your hands on a couple of small pumpkins. When you have the pumpkins, hollow them out and give them nasty faces with evil little smiles and beady eyes. Once done, carefully scratch your invitation on the back of the pumpkin, without piercing it all the way through (however if you do pierce it, it;s quite alright too). Now place a candle inside the hollowed pumpkin and attach a note that will let your guests know that they will have to light the candle in the dark to see the invitation at it's best (and that they must do so with their parents close by).
Now, that being done, there's one problem: you still have the contents of the pumpkin left over! Ask your mom or dad to make some pumpkin soup, pumpkin cakes, etc. with them and, if you don't want them, donate them to those who would appreciate it.
This is an easy one! Ask your friends
to dress in their scariest clothes! However it is totally up to you,
but be sure to mention it under the “Dress Code” section of your
invitation.
Here are a couple of ideas for your
Halloween party decorations which will be sure to encourage that
haunted atmosphere. Should you need any additional Halloween
decorations, just pop down to the appropriate retailer in your area.
Paper mache tombstones
Spooky Sounds
Jack-O’-Lanterns
Fake cobwebs
Spiders
Sheets with glowing eyes (ask your parents to help you with this one)
Fake coffins
Fake Skeletons
Spiders
Bats
Ask your dad, older brother or friend
to dress up as Frankenstein! Then ask them to open the door and
receive your guests with a low, scary, “welcome”.
As you know, these are used to ensure
that your friends remember your party for days, weeks, months and
years to come. As such, ask your parents to take you shopping for
party favors! Alternatively, just have a look on the Internet for any
of these ideas:
What better way for ghouls, ghosts and witches to spend their time together than recollecting some of their scariest stories? For a bit of help, just pop into your local bookstore and get your hands on a copy of the eeriest, scariest ghost stories. Remember, the object of this activity is to encourage that Halloween feeling by telling your guests a couple of stories they would never, ever forget.
For added effect, this is best done in
an environment where the only light present is that on the face of
the speaker. Your guests should be submerged in darkness, wondering
whether something is about to creep up on them from behind!
Did you know that the tradition of Trick or Treat comes from the middle ages when the poor would go from door to door asking for food? Now what made this special is that, when they got food, they promised to pray for the dead.
Today millions upon millions of children around the world don their Halloween costumes and go Trick or Treating in their neighborhoods. Similarly, adults in these neighborhoods often go out buying candy because they know that the “Trick” in Trick or Treat means that if they don't give something, a trick could either be played on them or their house as a result.
Give your friends something slimy but tasty or just plain scary to eat at your Halloween party. Ask your parents to help you look for Halloween food recipes on the Internet. Here are a couple of ideas:
Coffin Surprise: Sandwiches shaped like coffins.
Bloody Beetroot Salad: It will definitely look gory!
The Ghoul’s Eyeball: As a
snack, consider using a small hardboiled egg, an olive and a small
piece of red pepper. Stack them with the egg at the bottom and the
pepper on top and pierce with a cocktail stick.
Now when it comes to the drinks, you will have to ensure that they are either black, purple, red, etc. Before your party starts, mix some of your favorite drinks together to get the right colors.
