Introduction

Get ready for the ultimate party that you and your magical friends will be able to enjoy! We are of course referring to a Harry Potter party and will be showing you what you can do to have the best time of your life! But first a little more information about the magical series of Harry Potter...

The story revolves around Harry Potter, a young boy with magical talents who not only survived an attack by the evil Lord Voldemort, but also destroyed him in a very mysterious way. Unfortunately young Harry's parents were killed during that very same battle, which is why his aunt and uncle found him on their doorstep.

But not all trouble is over as the dark Lord, also known as “He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named”, resurfaces again growing more powerful and more vicious than ever before. It is up to Harry and his friends, Hermione and Ron to save the day.

And just in case you didn't know, the Harry Potter series consists of 7 titles, all of which were written by British author, J.K. Rowling. They are Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

The success of the Harry Potter series was so phenomenal that it was translated into 67 different languages with a current estimated total sale of more than 400 million copies (that's 400,000,000 books!).

Harry Potter Party Invitations

Right-o, for any party to be successful, you'll definitely need some friends. As such, you'll need to muster all your artistic abilities and create a couple of invitations that you are sure will convince your closest pals of the magical world to come! Below you'll find a couple of ideas which you can use, but be sure to ask your parents for some help, especially if you need any of the materials mentioned as they'll have to take you to the store. Also, remember to include the following information:

  • Party Name: Give your party a magical name! Examples include “Jamie's D.A. Bash” (D.A. Is an abbreviation for “Dumbledore's Army”) or “Suzie's Gryffindor Party”

  • Salutation

  • Date & Time

  • Venue/Location

  • Dress Code

  • Contact Details

Marauder's Map Invitation

For this invitation you'll need to be a bit clever, because this is an invitation for kids only that grown-ups are not allowed to read (and some of them can be pretty clever!). As such, you will need to ask your parents to help you buy some invisible ink that will glow in the dark. If you are having trouble finding this in your area, just ask your parents to look on the internet.

Once you have the ink, you'll have to get sheets of paper – one for each person you are planning to invite as well as a couple extra to test on. Draw and decorate a nice Harry Potter-themed frame around the paper with a normal pen or paintbrush etc. You can even use the computer. When your frame is finished, you'll have to take a clean paintbrush or a toothpick and draw map of your area in the clear area with the invisible ink. If you need some practice first, use a clean piece of paper to draw your map with a regular pencil or pen.

Now, remember to indicate your house on the map and also to include the details of your party. Once you are finished, place your maps on a clean flat surface to dry. When they are dry, get ready to deliver them (by owl, by hand, etc.).

The Golden Snitch

This invitation is really fun and really easy to make! For this you'll need a squash ball for each of the people you want to invite, some transparent glue and a lot of glitter – gold and silver. Oh, you'll also need some thin but flexible wire as well as some very fine paper. If you need any of these items, just ask your parents.

Now, this invitation might require some skill, so if you're stuck... once again. Ask your parents for help.

To start off you'll want to take a squash ball and lightly cover it with the glue. Next, cover the entire ball with golden glitter. Be sure that every inch is covered. Place the ball somewhere to dry and get ready to start on the wings (this is the part that requires a bit of skill, so ask your parents to help).

Using the aforementioned wire, create a frame for the wings of your snitch. Make sure they look authentic, even if it does take a while. Remember to have some wire left over at the end where it will attach to the ball.

When your wing frames are done, trace their outer shape on the paper – with the left and the right wings next to each other with their smallest sides pointing to each other. Once done, carefully write the details of your invitation on inside each traced wing on the paper.

When that's done, cut out the wing shapes and lay them next to each other – smallest points facing as this is how they will attach to the ball. Now take the wire frames and cover them lightly with glue. Very carefully, place them onto the paper wings.

Now, almost done! Using the glue, cover the blank side of the wings with some glue. Be careful to not use too much force when applying the glue so that the paper won't come undone. Use the gold and silver glitter to decorate the sticky side of the wings until there is not a patch of the original paper visible any more. You can also decorate the other side with the invitation on it, but be careful as not to obscure any of the details.

And finally, when you are done, take the wings and stick them into the snitch. You might want to ask your mommy or daddy as this requires a bit of strength.

Harry Potter Party Dress Code

Your guests will want to know if they should be wearing anything in particular to your party. As such it will be good to tell them to dress like one of the characters from Harry Potter or just like members of the respective houses: Ravenclaw, Slytherin, Hufflepuff and Gryffindor.

Here are a couple of items everyone will need:

  • Pointy Hats (for the witches)

  • Robes

  • Wands

Harry Potter Party Guest Arrival & Announcement

Harry Potter Party Favors

There are so many Harry Potter party favors available in shop and on the internet that you won't be short of ideas. But just in case you want to make them yourself, have a look at our invitations as the Marauder's map as well as the Golden Snitch – if you haven't used them already. They will ensure that your guests remember your party for a long time and will simply require you to change the details a bit to only include the name of your party and the date.

Harry Potter Party Activities

Dueling Rock, Paper, Scissors

Do you know 'Rock, Paper, Scissors'? Well, if so, then you'll enjoy this game! All you need to do is change the words “rock”, “paper” and “scissors” to a spell from the Harry Potter books. But remember, no unforgivable curses are allowed! Here are a couple of spell you and your friends can use:

  • Confundus: Confuse your opponent

Find Voldemort

Get as many little pieces of paper as there are people playing this game and mark one of them with an 'X'. Put it in a bag and have each of the participants draw one piece of paper – but remember, they must not let anyone see what they drew from the bag! Now everyone must look at their little piece of paper – the person with the 'X' on the piece of paper is Voldemort (but they should keep it a secret).

Everyone must sit in a circle. The object of the game is to find the person (Voldemort) who is winking at the others. This means that everyone who is playing must look into the eyes of everyone else to see if they are winking. If one of the players suspect someone of being Voldemort, that person has to say the body bind curse (Petrificus Totalus) and point to the person they suspect. If they are right, the game starts again. However, if they are wrong, then they are knocked out of the round.

The person who is Voldemort has to ensure that he remains unseen while knocking other people out of the round by winking at them.

Wizard Snap

This game simply requires a deck of cards and is similar to normal snap, but with a difference. If one player places a card with a certain value and the next person places a card with the same value, then both players have to shout out the first and most powerful spell that comes to mind (no unforgivable curses!). The first person to complete their spell wins the round. But, the person who was to slow has to suffer the effects of the other person's spell for one round (until two other people lay down cards of the same value). The person who ends up with all the cards wins.

  • Manticore Pizzas

  • Werewolf Meatballs

  • Muggle Brains (Hot dogs)

  • Dragon Eyes (Scottish Eggs)

  • Hermione's Brain Booster (Salads)

And as for drinks...

  • Snape's Shrinking Serum (Sprite Mixed with sherbet)

  • Hermione's Polyjuice Potion (Sprite with a scoop of peppermint ice cream)

  • Felix Felicis (A number of yellow, red and golden-colored sports drinks mixed ogether).
