Introduction

Consider yourself heroic and chivalrous? Well if so, then you might just be a knight. And what better way to celebrate your knighthood than by throwing a party for you and your brave friends? Below you'll find all the information you need to organize the best medieval bash in the land! But before we begin, great Sir, just a couple of notes on the knights of old.

The first thing you need to know if you are to be a successful knight is the chivalric code, which states that one should always "Protect the weak, defenseless, helpless and fight for the general welfare of all". Naturally this is a code to be kept in the heart and mind of the knight and that he displays his commitment to the code through his actions. Additionally, however, a knight also has to receive some proper training to ensure that he is up to the task (see activities below). Now, do you think you can name a couple of knights? If not, here are a couple of the most well known names in history:

King Arthur - Everyone knows King Arthur, and if you don't then you'll be well served to know that he was one of the most legendary British leaders in history. Most of his life's deeds are shrouded behind the veils of mystery and fiction, but it is generally accepted that he led a successful defense against the Saxon invaders in the early 6th century. Some stories also claim him to be the defender of Britain at the time against enemies both mortal and supernatural.

Sir Lancelot - Sitting together with King Arthur at the Round Table, Sir Lancelot is another of history's most well known knights with one of the most fascinating young lives ever imaginable. The stories tell that Lancelot was the son of King Ban of Benwick and his wife Elaine who were driven from their kingdom by a strong enemy. So along with their infant son they set off and finally came to a lake where they could rest. As Elaine tended to Ban's wounds, the Lady of the Lake arose and took the baby Lancelot from his parents to her magical kingdom where he was subsequently raised.

Of course there were many more famous knights such as Sir Gawain, Sir Galahad, Sir Tristan, Sir Gareth and King Richard the Lionheart. Take some time to read up on these characters as they all have a very different and fascinating story to tell. Right now, however, it's time to party!

Knight Design

To make a successful knight design you will need a computer loaded with the appropriate software (image editing programs and a word processor) as well as a printer. If you don't have a printer, just pop down to your local printing store along with your parents and make use of their services.

To start with you will need an image of a knight. Think in terms of two knights facing each other while lancing. It could also be a knight in full armor with a sword. When you have your image, it's time for the wording. Now remember, when typing make sure you use an old English font for that noble effect. Here's a sample of the words you can use:

"Sir Alex Williams cordially requests the pleasure of the company of Sir John Angus to a gathering of royal knights to be held on Monday January 5th at 8 pm. at 9991 Daisy Avenue, Headwell Manor, England".

Be sure to replace all the necessary details with your own. When done, just get it printed on the appropriate paper and get ready to deliver them.

Knight Scroll

For the knight scroll you can use the text above, but will have to put in a little effort with the paper as you will need aged paper. For this purpose you can get some parchment from your local stationary store and print the invitation on it with a laser jet printer. When done and if your paper is not already aged, simply use some coffee or tea to soak the invitation in and let it dry.

Once done, use some sealing wax and a seal to seal your scroll and get ready for a royal delivery errand.

Excalibur

This invitation can either be store bought or made using paper mache. Whichever way you choose, be sure to include all the necessary details on the sword itself or on a separate invitation on the sword.

Knight Party Dress Code

For the ultimate knight party you will only need to specify “Knight” under the dress code of your party. Now this doesn't necessarily mean full knight gear as knights often wore more comfortable clothes. It would therefore be appropriate to instruct your friends that the only requirements regarding their attire should be a sword and a tunic over their normal play clothes.

Knight Party Decorations

Here are a couple of decorations to consider for your Knight Party. If you aren’t planning on making them yourself, then just ask your parents to help you purchase them from the appropriate retailer in your are or from the internet.

  • Banners

  • Flags

  • Pendants

  • Crests

  • Treasure Chests

  • Castle Portcullis Backdrops

Knight Party Activities

Are you sure you and your friends are ready to be knights? If so, then these activities will test your valor and help you prove that you are worthy of the title.

Knight the Brave

Before you can be proper knights you will have to be knighted by a king. As such, someone (perhaps your dad) will have to dress up as the king and have a sword at the ready. The person who wants to be knighted should then go down on one knee in front of the king and bow his or her head. Then the king should then speak the words by which each knight must pledge:

A warrior of honor is the poet of justice and truth.

They are the guardians of the weak, they are the defenders of the helpless.

Money, Power, a warrior of honor seeks not these things.

They salve their lives for those they serve.

Every one dies, not every one truly can ever live, unless they understand and apply the truths of honor and duty.

No one gains true respect by the murder and the pain of others.

Those who seek for valor will discover the poets of justice that lie within their noble hearts.”

After that the king must tap lightly with the flat side of the blade of the sword, once on each shoulder of the knight and say:

Arise, Sir , knight of the realm”.

Prisoner Rescue

Knights often had to go on quests to rescue the helpless and defend those who couldn't defend themselves. As such you and your team mates will have to summon all the courage you have for the following game.

A large playing area should be divided into two parts, with a prison section allocated at each part. Then all the participants have to be divided into two groups with one of each group being selected as the prisoner of the other team.

Now, each team has to send knights into the other teams area to rescue those that need salvation. As such they will have to be swift and clever as to reach their targets. Once the targets are reached, both the knight and the prisoner is safe. But now both of them have to get back to their own area!

If at any time a knight from the opposing team is caught in the other team's area, they become the prisoners of that team.

Target Practice

Equip yourself with a toy bow and arrow set and get ready for a round of target practice with your friends. Alternatively, if you don't have a bow and arrow set, place a number of empty cans or empty plastic bottles at various distances from the throwing line. Design a points system at which the different targets count different points according to their distance and how difficult it is to hit them. The player with the most points at the end of the game, wins.

The Golden Quest

Ask your parents to hide an object somewhere in the venue and to design a variety of treasure maps and clues – some true and some false – which you and your friends can use to find the secret treasure. For a bit of competition, why not divide into a couple of teams and see who gets to the treasure first?

Food & Drink

As you may know, knights more often than not ate venison and drank wine. But then again, they were full grown men. For the purpose of this party, have some red-colored soft drinks at the ready to double as the wine and ask your parents to prepare any of the following dishes:

  • Barbecue (Steak, chops, etc.)

  • Chicken Wings

  • Fruits (yes, knights ate grapes, apples, oranges, etc.)

  • Burgers (alright, they didn't have burgers back then, but if they did, do you think knights would have liked them?)

  • Pizza (no one can resist a slice of pizza, not even a knight!)
