Introduction

If you're a fan of all things "out of this world" then this party is definitely for you! The space-themed party is one that all lovers of the planets, stars and galaxies will be able to enjoy. And to help you with the organization of your party, we've put together a little bit of information as well as handy tips on the current topic. But first, a little more about space...

As you may well know, space is actually a really big place. In fact, they say that if you were to take all the matter in space and put it on one spot, it would be like having a grain of sand in a building 20 miles high by 20 miles wide. Pretty impressive, right? We think so. And just to keep the interesting facts rolling, here are a couple of other interesting facts about space:

Our earth can fit into the sun more than one million times and is sometimes called the "3rd rock from the sun" because we are in fact the 3rd closest planet to the sun, after Mercury and Venus. While the latter two would be a little uncomfortable to live on due to their high temperatures (among other things), there are others that would simply be to cold for us. These include all the other planets a bit further away from the sun like Mars (called the red planet and covered in ice), Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.

But wait, there's more:

  • Any liquid in space (that doesn't freeze straight away) will form into a sphere because it would want to expand into all directions at the same time.

  • Neil Armstrong first set foot on the moon with his left foot.

  • All the planets except Venus rotate counter-clockwise

  • If someone shouted in space, you wouldn't be able to hear it because there is no air to carry the sound waves.

Space Design

Space - some say it is the final frontier. What do you think?

While everyone has their own opinion, the Space Design is an invitation that everyone will love. For this invitation you will simply need a computer loaded with the appropriate software and a printer. If you don't have a printer, ask someone who has one if you will be able to use theirs or drop by your local printing firm and make use of their services. In addition we would recommend the use of a card template to help you with the layout of your invitation.

First off you will need an image or a couple of images to go on the front of your invitation. Now these can be anything from pictures of the sun, the stars, nebulae, planets, etc. If you are stuck for ideas, just use your favorite search engine to search for images about space. Just keep in mind that you might need to use an image editing suite to edit the picture once you have found it. Another thing that will have to go on the front of the card is the name of your party.

Once all that's done, add the appropriate decorations along with the invitation details to the inside of the card. When you are satisfied, have it printed and get ready to deliver your space invitations!

Planet Invitation

Get your hands on some paper mache - either making it yourself using your own recipe or one from the internet, or buying it from the appropriate local retailer in your area. In addition to the paper mache, you will also need some round balloons and paint.

To start off you will need to inflate the balloons to an appropriate size and then cover them with the paper mache. Remember that you will have to make them round or spherical to resemble the shape of a planet or moon or asteroid. When you're satisfied and once they have dried, decorate them with paint and wait for it to dry before adding the details of your party.

Spaceship Invitation

Think you can make a spaceship? Well, we know you can and we'll tell you how.

For this invitation you will be needing some rigid but bendable wire, paper mache, cardboard, tin foil, glue and paint.

To start off you will need to bend the wire into the frame of your space ship. If you want to make a rocket or a spaceship with a cylindrical shape then just use something like an empty toilet roll (the cardboard bit) or anything else of your choice to spiral the wire from one end to the other. Remember to leave some wire at one end to make the tip of the cone. Once you are satisfied with your wire frame, add some tin foil to cover the entire frame.

Next up, cover the frame with paper mache and let it dry. In some cases you might need to use a couple of layers of paper mache - letting the one dry before applying the next one.

When your paper mache spaceship is done you will need to cut out triangles from the cardboard to make the fins of the rocket. Use the glue to add them to the bottom of the spaceship or rocket. Once the fins have finally dried, decorate your spaceship with the paint, adding the details of your party as a second layer once the first has dried.

Space Party Dress Code

What do we call people who venture into space? That's right, astronauts. As such it would only be fitting to ask your friends to dress as astronauts for your party. Be sure to state this on your invitations, even if you want them to come dressed as someone or something else (no one can deny the fact that aliens could possibly exist!).

Space Party Decorations

Here are a couple of decorations to consider for your Space Party. If you aren’t planning on making them yourself, then just ask your parents to help you purchase them from the appropriate retailer in your are or from the internet.

  • Glow in the dark stars

  • Aliens

  • Planets (made from paper mache)

  • Space posters

  • Tinfoil (to cover the walls with)

  • Aluminum cups and plates.

Space Party Guest Arrival & Announcement

Here you can be as creative as you like. Use any of your favorite space characters to greet your friends. Examples here include Chewbacca from Star Wars, Captain Spock from Star Trek or why not even the president welcoming astronauts?

  • Space Shuttle Ornament

Space Party Activities

There’s nothing like a good party activity to ensure that a great time is had by all. Below are a couple of ideas which you can use and change as you want to suit the purposes of your party.

Planetary Bowling

Forget the bowling ball and pins, you will be making your own planetary bowling set.

Use paper mache to make your own planets. This is achieved by inflating a balloon to the appropriate size and shape and then covering it with paper mache. As soon as it has dried, use some paint to decorate it like one of your favorite planets.

And to make the pins, all you will need are a couple of empty plastic bottles. Fill these with sand and cover them with tinfoil. Once done, just arrange them in the usual tenpin bowling triangle and get ready to bowl!

Moonwalk Reenactment

Neil Armstrong first placed his left foot on the moon at 2:56UTC on July 21, 1969 and spoke the very well known phrase “This is one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”.

The purpose of this game is to reenact the moonwalk scene (which you can view on the internet if you need any help) to the best of your abilities. Remember that gravity is much less on the moon and will therefore require slow and exaggerated movements.

Make this activity interesting by awarding a special prize to the winner.

Moon Basketball

As said before, the moon's gravity is a lot less than that of earth. In fact, the moon's gravity is 83% less which means that you will be able to soar through the sky a lot higher than usual (but also a lot slower than usual and with a slight problem when it comes to stopping).

Now for this game we'd recommend you get yourself a balloon or a very light beach ball to use as the basket ball. And remember, your movements have to be very slow to make the game seem realistic.

Space Film Marathon

If you're not in the mood for basketball or bowling, then why not settle down with your friends for a space film marathon? This will ensure that the correct mood is set for the rest of the party. Here are a couple of films you and your friends can enjoy:

  • Solaris

  • Planet of the Apes

  • Star Wars

  • Spaceballs

  • Star Trek

Food & Drink

Space food is at best nutritional and not very tasty. So we'd recommend that you have normal foods, but give them stellar names. Here are a couple of ideas:

  • Pizza: Slice of the moon

  • Burgers: Space Burgers

  • Chicken Wings: Alien hands

  • Pancakes: Flat Moon
