Introduction

It's time yet again for a great party that you and your friends will be able to enjoy! And the theme of our current party is a Sports Party, which all the young sports enthusiasts will be able to enjoy. Below you will find all the tips and information needed to organize the successful event, so get a notebook and a pen. But first, a little more about the topic.

As you may well already know, one of the most important sporting events celebrated all over the globe is that of the Olympics. And as is common knowledge, the Olympics originated in Greece. But did you know that one myth regarding the origins of the Olympic games is that it was started by mighty Zeus to celebrate his defeat of Cronus? But it wasn't called the Olympic games initially. Heracles (more commonly known as Hercules) beat his brothers in a race and was crowned with an olive wreath - and he called the games "Olympic!" From then on it was known as the Olympic games which we all know to be celebrated every four years.

Aside from myth, however, is the popular speculation as to the official origins of the Olympics around the year 776 BC. A bit later, during the 6th and 5th centuries the games were at their most popular in ancient Greece as it was also a religious event where sacrifices were made to honor not only Zeus, but also the hero and king of Olympia, Pelops. But from there the Olympic games started losing their prominence, especially as the Romans rose in power and banned all things that didn't have its roots in Christianity, including the Olympic games due to its pagan heritage.

It was only about 1400 years later that the games would again be revived. Notable attempts include the "Olympick Games" which were held at Chipping Campden in England and the L'Olympiade de la République in France. From then onward, the Olympic games again gathered momentum and formed into the hugely successful event we all know today.

And that being said, it's time to get down to business and organize ourselves a party!

Sports Party Invitations

Below you will find some useful ideas for Sports Party invitations. Should you require any of the materials or items necessary, just ask your parents to help by purchasing them from a retail store in your area or from the Internet. And remember, including the following information in your invitation will ensure that your guests will have all the information they need.

Party Name: Be sure to give your party an appealing name that will leave your friends convinced that it will be a cool event. Think of something along the lines of “Danny's Olympian Hero Party”

  • Salutation
  • Date & Time
  • Venue/Location
  • Dress Code

Olympic Design

By far the easiest and the cheapest invitation to make is the Olympic Design as it is a simple invitation card that you will be able to make yourself. For this invitation you will need a computer loaded with the appropriate software and a printer. If you don't have either of the two, just ask a friend if you can borrow theirs. In addition, use an invitation template to help you with the layout of the card.

To start off you will need a couple of elements that you feel represent the Olympics. These include the Olympic rings (designed by Baron Pierre de Coubertin in 1921 – said to be the founder of the modern Olympic games), an olive wreath (as worn by Hercules) or anything else you seem fit. Now this design will go on the front of your invitation along with your party name.

On the inside of your invitation you will want to list all the party details in a wording and font appropriate to the topic and add some minor decorations you deem fit.

When all has been done, all you will need to do is to print it out and get ready to deliver it.

For those who want to go the extra mile, why not make a wreath to be glued to the front of the card? If you are planning on doing this, then be sure to leave some space for it in your design.

Olympic Wreath

It's a Sports Party and as such all your friends will be arriving as champions. After all, most sports nowadays are Olympic sports, be it summer or winter sports. So, to ensure that your friends receive a Herculean invitation, why not pop down to the appropriate store in your are or look online (ask your parents to help you buy) to get your hands on a wreath for each of your friends. For those who have some artistic skill (or artistic parents), why not make your own wreath with twigs, twine and leaves and spray it with gold or silver paint.

Once you have your wreaths, whether self-made or bought, make an invitation like the one mentioned under the Olympic Design to attach. When everything is completed, get ready to deliver and start making the final preparations for your world class event!

Sports Award

The sports award is a must for any sports party as it will show your friends that you know they are true champions (as all friends are champions)!

For this invitation you will either need to go down to your local sports store or have a look on the Internet for a suitable award for each of your friends. Ideas here include trophies and certificates. If you don't want to spend too much money, then just make your own certificates using a computer, a printer and perhaps some certificate paper that you will be able to get at your local stationary supplier (or, failing that, from the Internet).

Now, for those who are planning to buy each of their friends a trophy as an invitation, you can either have the details of your party engraved on the trophy's plaque or you can make an invitation as described under the Olympic Design invitation to attach to the trophy. Those who are planning to make an award certificate will have to ensure that they have the wording wright. Here's a quick example which you can modify to reflect your own details:

The Society of Sporting Heroes

Certificate of Outstanding Achievement

In honor of your skills as a sportsman and your loyal friendship, we gladly present you,

with this award as well as an invitation to

to be held on at .

Sports Party Dress Code

Did someone say Sports Party? Well then the dress code will obviously be... Sports! However you will probably want to narrow it down a bit for your friends to ensure that they have the necessary information they need. If you are planning to have a baseball party, then you have to state “Baseball Uniform” under the “Dress Code” section of your invitation. For those having an all-sports party (one where all known sporting types are welcome), then you simply need to state it as such; the same goes for the Greek Olympian hero sports party.

Sports Party Decorations

To decorate your sports party successfully, you will need a couple of items that correctly reflect the theme of your party. To be more precise, it will have to reflect the category of your party. For instance, if you are having a baseball sports party then it would be rather silly to have basketball hoops all over the place (although they would be great fun!). As such, take some time to figure that out before deciding on decorations. But just in case you are stuck, here are a couple of ideas which you can use should it fit with your party theme:

  • Sports Instruments – Hockey sticks, Cricket bats, Tennis rackets, etc. Mount these against the wall or just leave them lying around the venue to supply that sporty atmosphere.

  • Balls – Baseball balls, Basketball balls, Football balls, Soccer balls, etc. Leaves these lying around in a similar fashion.

  • Banners & Pendants – Do you and your friends have favorite teams? Add the colors of these teams to the decorations with banners and pendants to unite everyone for a joyous event.

Sports Party Guest Arrival & Announcement

For guest arrival and announcement, why not ask your mom or your dad to dress up as a modern sportscaster or an ancient Olympian announcer to announce your friends as they arrive at the door? This will ensure that everyone gets a sporting introduction at your party.

Sports Party Favors

Party favors are those little items that you give your friends to ensure that they remember your party for some time to come. And just to make them that extra little bit more special, why not ensure that the party favors you supply are usable in some way? Here are a couple of ideas for both usable and ornamental party favors:

  • Key chains

  • Balls (Baseball balls, tennis balls, football balls, etc.)

  • T-shirts

  • Banners

  • Pendants

  • Awards

  • Stationary

  • Collector's cards

Sports Party Activities

The activities you decide to host at your party are often the part that makes it stand out from other parties. That's why it's important to have something fun that everyone will enjoy doing. Below are a couple of ideas for Sports Party activities that you can use and change to fit your party.

Olympic Trials

Recreate your own Olympic games to entertain your friends. For this game you will have to think of a number activities that you and your friends can compete in to see who scores the most points and, ultimately, wins the prize.

To start off, you will have to think up a course for you and your friends that will have a starting line and a finishing line. Once you have the course, you need to come up with a couple of activities to be done at each stage of the trial. An itinerary for such a trial would look something like this:

  • Shoot 10 3-pointer hoops

  • Sprint 100m

  • Swim 2 x 15m

  • Shooting (With toy gun)

  • Tree Climbing

  • Hit the target with a baseball

  • Kick a football

Naturally you will have to ask some parents to participate as judges to see that everyone plays fair and to make a note of each participant's performance. As said previously, the best performer obviously wins the prize.

Sports!

It's a Sports Party and therefore you must have at least one normal sporting event. Why not organize a game of baseball, basketball, football etc., that you and your friends will be able to enjoy? And just to make things interesting, use a ball (if you decide to play a ball sport) from another sport in the one you decided on. An example would be using a football ball as a basketball ball or a volley ball as a baseball.

Just in case there is someone that does not enjoy one type of sport as much as someone else does, be sure to keep a couple of sporting activities in mind that your friends will be able to partake in in equal measure. Consider, perhaps, something like Tug-of-War, for which you will simply need a rope or even an old sheet.

Sport Trivia

Who know the most about the sports they love? Set up a quiz game with your friends to see who knows the most! These quiz games can be bought either on the Internet or at the appropriate store in your area. Failing that, you can always just go ahead and make your own trivia by doing a little research about facts that you think your friends might know (there'd be no point in asking unanswerable questions) as well as trick questions.

King

For this game you'd need a soft ball that you'd be able throw other people with.

One person has to be selected as “IT” before the game starts and he or she gets to have the ball first. Now, the game starts with “IT” trying to hit as many people as possible with the soft ball. If someone is hit, then they are on “IT”'s team and have to help “IT” hit all the other participants with the ball. The last person to be hit with the ball – after all the others have joined “IT”'s team – gets to be the “IT” for the next round.

But as you may imagine, there are a couple of rules:

  1. Only “IT” and members of his or her team are allowed to handle the ball with any part of their body.

  2. People not on “IT”'s team may only touch the ball with their clenched fists. This means that they can hit the ball with their fists or pick it up between their fists, but may never touch the ball with the inside of their hands, or any other part of their body.

  3. Anyone breaking the rules, is disqualified until there is a new “IT”.

Food & Drink

As for food and drink for your Sports Party, you need only think about those foods that you think your sports heroes eat or that are served at sports stadiums around the world. If you or your parents have some artistic culinary skills, then you could decorate the food to resemble sports objects like baseballs, footballs, etc. Here are a couple of ideas for Sports Party foods:

  • Pizza (Making your own? Shape and decorate it like a basketball!)

  • Burgers (Think you can carefully cut out the seam of a baseball ball from a bun? It's worth a try!)

  • Chicken Wings

  • Peanuts

  • Donuts

  • Chips & Dip

  • Candy

  • Cakes

To ensure that everyone has enough energy for your party you will have to ensure that they get sufficient fluids with all the necessary nutrients. Some possible drinks for your sports party include the list below, but we'll leave it up to you to decide:

  • Sports drinks

  • Fruit juices

  • Sodas

  • Milkshakes
