The First Avenger is coming! To the silver screen that is. The next comic book hero to make his way to the big screen is none other than Captain America and the movie's release on July 22 is highly anticipated by millions of comic book fans around the world. The story is the same as always – the physically weak becomes strong and only through that transformation does he discover his inner strength. In this particular story it is a young man by the name of Steve Rogers, who is turned down by the United States military in the war against the Nazis due to his physical weakness. But a general with his own agenda has other plans for Rogers and so a new superhero is born.
The very first time
Captain America was introduced to the American public was in 1940 before the United States entered World War II. However, the comic book entitled Captain America Comics showed a picture of Captain America punching Hitler in the face, something that was a very bold statement at the time. This is also not the first time Captain America has been on the big screen. In 1944 he was made into a 15 part series called Captain America starring Dick Purcell. Eventually, Captain America become one of the Avengers and a new era of superheroes was born.
The up and coming Captain America: The First Avenger movie is set in two different times. Much of the movie is a flashback set in the time of WWII and as such the primary focus of the movie will be on war and the defeat of the bad guy. Not so different from any other superhero movie really. However, the twist is at the beginning and the end, which happen in a time set 60 years after the war and begins with the discovery of .... well best not to spoil it. Suffice it to say that the movie will have an appearance by Nick Furry and who knows, maybe a few other Avengers may make an appearance.
Steve Rogers/Captain America is played by Chris Evans, who we know as Johnny Storm from the Fantastic Four. The bad guy? That would be the Johann Schmidt/Red Skull, played by Hugo Weaving, whom we know as Mr. Smith in the Matrix movies, Elrond in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, and of course as Megatron in the
Transformers. The female interest in the story is Peggy Carter, played by Hayley Atwell. This lovely beauty has been seen in a number of chick flicks, but is well suited for her role in Captain America: The First Avenger.
Who are some of the other stars in the show? How about Tommy Lee Jones? This is certainly no surprise as he has made his rounds in the superhero circuit of movies, including as Two Face in Batman Forever. In Captain America: The First Avenger he plays Col. Chester Phillips. Other appearances include Sebastian Stan as James 'Bucky' Barnes and Dominic Cooper as Howard Stark. With a cast lineup like this and a storyline that is sure to be solid, Captain America: The First Avenger is sure to be a box office hit, possible even among those who are not traditionally superhero fans.
Indeed, Captain America: The First Avenger is probably the most highly anticipated superhero movie of 2011 and that is up against other movies including
Thor!, X-Men: First Class, and
Green Lantern. While there have been concerns about the Captain America costume by critics and fans alike, things look good and the Ultimates Captain Uniform is the choice. If you are into superheroes, action movies, and even romance, then get yourself to a cool movie theater this summer for Captain America: The First Avenger and you will get a summer's worth of entertainment in one show.
