Introduction

Time for a party, and since it's that time of year we all know what the only kind of party there will be to have... a rippin' Halloween party! Below you will find all the information you need to organize the successful yet dreadfully spooky event! But before we get to that, some things you might not have known...

  • As we all know, the colors orange and black are usually associated with this day. But do you know why? Well, the orange represents the fall harvest. And the black... associated with darkness and death.

  • There's a story behind the Jack-O'-Lantern, and it reads as follows:

  • Long ago in Ireland there lived a man called Stingy Jack, a farmer with a couple of nasty habits which included getting drunk, greed and gambling. Upon a day Old Jack tricked the Devil into climbing a tree and carved a cross in the trunk of the tree once the Devil got caught in the branches. Subsequently the Devil couldn’t get down and was, quite naturally, rather upset. To reward Jack for his evil deed, the Devil cursed the man, condemning him to walk the earth, only at night, for the rest of his days with naught but the light he was carrying with him… a hollowed turnip with a candle inside.

  • The ancient Celts believed that the barrier between the land of the living and the dead is at its thinnest on Old Hallows Even (which is where the name Halloween comes from). As such, they wore masks to blend in with all the creepy entities that might just be right beside them on this day.

  • Own a black cat? Well, they were believed to be the familiars of witches, spying on normal folk.

  • There's a Count Dracula Society and it was founded in 1962.

  • If you don't like bats, well, best to leave them be as they control the amount of flying insects at night. And while bats tend to avoid people, insects are not always so shy.

And that being said, it's time to organize one monster of a party!

Halloween Party Invitations

‘Tis the season to be scary! But also a good time to be joyous and have some of your best friends around you for some great times. And as such, you will have to create an invitation for each of them. Below you will find a couple of ideas you can use for invitations. Should you need any of the materials mentioned, be sure to get them from the appropriate supplier in your area. In addition, be sure to include the following details in your invitation:

  • Party Name: Give your party a themed name so that your friends will know what its all about. An idea would be “John’s Reaper Fest”.

  • Salutation

  • Date & Time

  • Venue/Location

  • Dress Code

  • Contact Details

  • Additional information…

Scary Jack-O’-Lantern

For a little background on the Jack-O’-Lantern, just have a gander at our introduction. Otherwise, here’ how to do it:

Get your hands on a couple of small pumpkins – one for reach of the friends you wish to attend. Once you have the pumpkins, you will have to hollow them out and give them some spooky faces. After that you will have to carefully scratch our your invitation on the back of the pumpkin, though be careful not to pierce the skin all the way through. Now, all that’s left to do is to place a candle inside the hollowed pumpkin and instruct your guests to light it to see your invitation glow!

Just remember that you needn’t discard the flesh of the pumpkin – use it for your party snacks. Each year there are millions of tons of pumpkin flesh discarded which could be used to feed the needy. Think about it.

Reaper Figurine

We all know the Grim Reaper as a figure stalking through the night collecting souls. Though if you have read Terry Pratchett, then you will know that Death (The Grim Reaper) is quite a stand-up guy.

So if you are willing to spend a little money on the invitations to your party, then buy a number of Reaper figurines, one for each of the guests you plan to invite. These can either be bought at the appropriate retailer in your area or off the internet.

Now in addition to the little figurines, be sure to make or buy card-based invitations on which you can include all the details of your party.

Once you have the figurines and the invitations, simply combine them and get ready to deliver!

Halloween T-shirt Invitation

For this invitation you will have to get your hands on a couple of blank t-shirts for each of your friends (after enquiring or guessing their sizes).

When you have the t-shirts, it's on to the design, for which you may need some software. If you don't already have the appropriate software on your computer, have a look on the internet for some free screen-printing software or pay a visit to your local software retailer and ask them for advice.

Now when you are designing the image, take care to ensure that it remains in line with the Halloween theme. This design will typically be for the front while the details of your party will be on the back (you can add some minor Halloween decorations there, too).

Once you have the design, simply take it to your local screen printer and ask them to print it onto your t-shirt. Just note that it would be a good idea to let them know which software you will be using before you start the design to ensure it is compatible with theirs.

And finally, when your t-shirts are printed, all that's left to do is get ready to deliver!

Halloween Party Dress Code

The dress code for Halloween is… well, Halloween. However if you would like your guests to dress up as witches or ghouls or anything specific, be sure to state it as such under the “Dress Code” section of your invitations.

Halloween Party Guest Arrival & Announcement

Staying with The Grim Reaper (a.k.a. Death), ask one of your parents or friends to dress up like him and await your guests at the door with a bag full of treats. As they enter, the person dressed as The Grim Reaper can greet them in an appropriate voice and offer them a treat.

Halloween Party Favors

Party favors are those items that you give your friends to thank them for coming but also to ensure that they remember your party for days, weeks, months and years after. Here are a couple of ideas:

  • Mugs

  • Goblets

  • Bookends

  • Candles

  • Lamps

  • Skeletons

  • Key rings

  • Calendars

  • Games

Halloween Party Activities

Truth or Dare

Everyone loves to play this game, and since it’s Halloween, you can add that spooky edge to the evening.

Start by getting as many scraps of paper as there will be guests. On half of the amount of pieces of paper, write "Truth" and on the other half "Dare". When that's done, you have to write the name of a guest on a piece of paper. Do this until all the pieces of paper have either "truth" or "Dare" and the name of a guest. When that's done, you will need to put each piece of paper into a separate balloon which you then inflate afterwards.

When all the preparation is done and it's time for the game, each guest will have to pick a balloon and, when it's their turn, pop it to reveal the person they have to "Truth" or "Dare". But take care to fashion your questions or dares in a way appropriate to the theme of the party!

Horror Film Marathon

There’s nothing more appropriate than a couple of good and super scary movies for your Halloween party!

Naturally you’ll have to pop down to your local DVD store before the event and get your hands on a couple of titles sure to have your guests chew on their nails. Though to be fair, have some popcorn and drinks at the ready.

Pass The Hat Variation

As you may have guessed, this game simply requires two hats and the enthusiasm of those who want to play it.

When it's time for the activity, you and your friends will have to divide into two groups. When that is done, each group must form a circle and select one person who will start. This person then has to transfer the hat from their head to the head of the person to their left, without the use of their hands. If hands are used, that person is out. And if the hat falls, the person who has to pass the hat has to think of an original way to pick it up.

The group to win is the one that gets the hat back to the first person.

Halloween Acronyms

Feel like a mental challenge? Then this game is especially for you!

To start off, each guest has to think of a four-letter word in line with the theme of the party. They will then have to write it down on a scrap of paper and put it in a hat or bowl.

The purpose of this game is to assume that each word is an acronym. As such, one person should draw a word from the hat or the bowl and state the first noun that pops into his or her head that begins with the same letter as the first letter of the acronym. The next person in a clockwise direction should provide a verb beginning with the same letter as the second letter of the acronym. The third person should supply an adjective or adverb beginning with the same letter as the third letter of the adjective and the fourth person a noun beginning with the same letter as the fourth one of the acronym.

You’ll be bent double with laughter before you know it as people often come up with some pretty strange things.

Food & Drink

As for Halloween foods, you’ll have the opportunity to get creative. Think of sandwiches shaped like coffins or a tomato soup with something that looks suspiciously like eyeballs, etc. Get the idea? As such, here are a couple of foods which you will be able to use for the occasion:

  • Pumpkin cakes

  • Pumpkin bread

  • Savory pumpkin pie

  • Pumpkin Cookies

  • Pumpkin soup

  • Pumpkin Ravioli

  • Biscuits

  • Mini pizza

  • Nachos

And as for drinks… well, needless to say something with pumpkin but otherwise something that you and your friends will enjoy.
