Days until Halloween: 51
Welcome to the Horror page, where you
will find all manner of tips and bits of information on how to
organize the gruesome event. Below you will find ideas for
invitations, decorations, party activities and much, much more. But
before we get to that, just a couple of interesting things you might
not have known about the Horror movie genre.
One of the first things you have to do
with any party, is send out the invitations. And below you will find
a couple of ideas which you are free to use as you wish. Just note
that should you require any of the items mentioned, you will need to
buy them from the appropriate store in your area or from the
internet. In addition, be sure to include the following information
on your invitations:
Party Name: It’s a Horror-themed party, which means you’ll have to think of a horrific name for it. An idea would be “Joe’s Slash Fest”
Salutation
Date & Time
Venue/Location
Dress Code
Contact Details
Additional information…
An easy invitation to make, the Fake Skull invitation will require you to get a fake skull for each of the friends you wish to invite. These can either be bought from the appropriate retailer in your area, or from the internet.
When you have the fake skulls, you’ll need to create a couple of invitations to go with them. These can either be home made or bought, whatever suits your fancy. Alternatively you can also decorate the skull with the invitation details (the preferred option for those with an artistic aptitude).
Finally, combine the card (if applicable) and the fake skull and get ready to deliver!
To make this invitation you will need a computer loaded with the appropriate software and a printer. We would also recommend using a template for the design of this invitation. These are usually to be found in most word processors or online.
Keeping the Horror theme in mind, think of a couple of images to add to the frontpage of your invitation. These can range from images from famous Horror movies or even your own creations. If you are planning to use the internet as a source, do make sure that you have the necessary permission to download these images.
Once you have the images, position them on the template and add your party name as a title. When that's done, you will need to pay attention to the details of your Horror party. This usually comes on the inside or the flip side of the invitation.
When the entire invitation is done on
computer, print out one sample to see if it suits your tastes. If it
does, then go ahead and print out the rest.
To make the horror scroll, you will need a bit of creativity to make it look as authentic as possible. For this you will need to get sheets of special paper, such as parchment (available from your local art store or the appropriate stationary supplier) and think of ways to alter the appearance and/or texture of the paper. Ideas here include ageing the paper (with coffee, tea or ageing ink) and adding some fake dried blood. Using the appropriate font will also add to the authenticity of your design. Examples here include the common “Chiller” font, though we’re sure you’ll be able to come up with your own.
Now, once you have figured out what you will be doing, be sure to add all the appropriate details of your party in the appropriate style. Now, the key here is to keep contrast in mind – that is to say, polite – if perhaps too polite – wording with the occasional spatter of blood, etc.
Those with a creative streak will find that merely making this invitation will provide hours of fun.
It’s a Horror Movie party which means that dressing up like characters from a Horror film will do just the trick. And as you know, there are many, many to choose from. Whatever you decide, remember to specify it under the “Dress Code” section of your invitations. If you are stuck for ideas, keep in mind that fake blood, fake wounds, etc. will do just fine.
Below you will find some ideas for
decoration you will be able to use for your Horror Movie party. In
addition, if you have a basement or a barn, why not take those into
consideration as suitable venues for your party? If you need any of
the following items, be sure to buy them at the appropriate supplier
in your area or from the internet.
Tombstones
Limbs & various other bloody body parts
Bloody chainsaws (make sure they can’t switch on at all)
Spider webs
Coffins
Fake blood one the walls, ceiling and floor
Skeletons
Horrible sounds! (Yes, sounds can add to the decorative ambience.)
Fake bloodied knives
Unidentifiable bits of bloody something (soak pieces of fruit/meat in ketchup)
Here’s an idea: replace your doorbell’s bell with a spine chilling scream for the event. As your guests stand outside wondering what that was, have a real scary character open the door and welcome your guests. As for their announcement, well, be creative and think along the lines of:
“Master, the dinner has arrived. It’s
Mr. & Mrs. Johnson”.
Party favors are those things that you
can use to thank your guests for coming or, in this case, ensure that
they never, ever, forget your party. Here are a couple of ideas for
party favors – all of which you will be able to get at your local
horror supply store or from the internet
Posters
Calendars
Key rings
Fake severed limbs
T-shirts
Movies
Start your party off with a bloody bang by kicking back and relaxing with your friends while watching some of the scariest movies ever. Although there are many different opinions on the subject, you’ll be able to use any of the titles below if you don’t have any of your own.
Recommended titles for a horror film fest include:
The Exorcist
SAW
Hostel
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
The Shining
Silence of the Lambs
Halloween
Psycho
The Mist
Think you and your mates are good actors? Well, now is the time to find out! Think of any very famous scene from a horror movie you and your friends like. Once you have decided on that scene, someone will have to be chosen to start the event.
Now, the key here is to improvise on
that specific scene. This can be done by systematically entering new
characters (your friends) into the scene and seeing how it evolves
from there. Be sure to keep a couple of props handy as well as a
camera – this will make the perfect party favor or video to post on
the internet.
Think you are brave enough? As you may know, bravery is not only limited to doing things, but also to telling the truth, which will make this game the perfect event for a horror movie party. Here’s what you need to do to get started:
Get as many scraps of paper as there are friends coming to your party. Remember to include yourself in the count. Once that is done, write each friend’s name on a scrap of paper and turn them over. Now, scramble them around so that even you won’t know which scrap of paper belongs to which friend. When that’s done, randomly write either “Truth” or “Dare” on each scrap of paper. As soon as all of them are done, put them in a bag or a hat.
When it’s time for the event, each
guest will have to draw a scrap of paper and perform the challenge
(“Truth” or “Dare”) on the paper to the guest whose name is
on the reverse side of the paper.
This is a very simple but fun activity that will take lots of concentration! Here’s how it works:
One of the guests will have to sit on a chair while all the others form a line in front of this particular guest. All the other guests, one by one, will then have to try and make him or her show emotion by pulling a face. The faces being made can either be scary or funny, but the key is that the person in chair may not show any emotion. If he or she does, then someone else gets to have a go.
For a Horror party it’s not so much
what foods you have as what it looks like. As such, you will have to
get creative with normal foods. See if you manage to create some
ominous-looking foods with things you and your friends like. If you
are stuck for recipes, be sure to have a look on the internet. Ideas
here include:
Tomato soup with boiled quail eggs or rounded bits of feta cheese(“Eyeball Surprise”)
Sandwiches in the shape of hands or fingers (“Handwiches”)
Burgers with green or red scrambled egg (“The Devil’s Buns”)
Pizza with ketchup, chilies, peppers, salami, etc. (“The Red Baron”)
And as for drinks, just anything that looks unusual. Have a look on the internet for recipes for non-alcoholic cocktails to which you can add either red or black colorant.
