Introduction

“Space: the final frontier...” - if you know your Star Trek, then you'll definitely know this phrase. And like Star Trek, there are many films, books and other forms of media that attempt to explore this interesting subject with its endless boundaries and possibilities of things that could well exist. Whether its due to human curiosity or just innocent fascination with this subject, it has spread throughout our lives to become and almost integral part of our every day lives – including the parties we host. As such we've put our minds together to come up with some of the ultimate ideas for space parties, which you can use and change at your own will. But first, a couple of interesting facts about that infinite wonder... Space.

  • A light year is measured in distance and indicates the amount of miles completed by light whilst moving at a speed of 300 000km per second in a period of one year. It therefore stands to reason that a light year is 9,500,000,000,000km.
  • There is more space than matter in the universe - this is rather obvious. But did you know that the entire amount of space compared to the entire amount of matter can be equated to a single grain of sand contained in a box of which the dimensions are 20 miles by 20 miles?
  • You cannot hear in space! Although an object might indeed make a sound as energy is released from it, there is no air to carry the sound waves to the ears of an observer.
  • While scientists still believed the universe to be around 6,000 years old by the year 1820, we now know that it is approximately 13,700,000,000 years old.

Space Party Invitations

The most important things in any party are of course the guests. As such you'll have to ensure that your invitations are up to the task of convincing them to come. Below you'll find a couple of our ideas which you are free to use as you wish. Should you require any of the materials mentioned, buy them from the appropriate local retailer or off the internet. Do remember to include the following details in your invitation to ensure that your guests have all the information they need:

  • Party Name: Supply your party with an appropriate name to ensure your friends will know what it’s all about. An idea would be “Sam’s Alien Invasion Bash”

  • Salutation

  • Date & Time

  • Venue/Location

  • Dress Code

  • Contact Details

  • Additional information…

Space Food Invitation

This invitation will require a bit of a budget as you will have to buy each of the friends you wish to invite some snacks that would fir in with the space them. Ideas here include all those foods contained in tin foil or shiny packaging. In addition, you will have to buy or make something these can be put in. In this case, nice little boxes decorated with tin foil will do just the trick.

Now, as soon as the food is sorted out, you will have to tend to the actual invitation. This needn’t be elaborate and may only consist of a normal invitation card that you either made or bought.

There are many great movie titles on the space theme out there, some of which can be bought at a really good price, second hand. Now, when you’ve bought the movies – one for each of the people you wish to invite – all you will need to do is make your own cover and replace it with the original movie cover. Do this simply using a computer and a printer.

A simple invitation to make and one that will only require you to get a key ring in line with the space theme for each of the friends you wish to invite. These can be bought at the appropriate store in your area or on the internet.

When you have the key rings, all you will need to do is create or buy an invitation card and attach it to the key ring. If you don’t know what to include in the invitation, just have a look above.

As the Space subject is a pretty broad one, you will have to give this one a bit of thought. Do you want your friends to come as astronaut, aliens or characters from famous space movies? Once you have decided, be sure to state it under the “Dress Code” section of your invitations.

Space Face Painting

Do aliens exist? Some say yes, other say no. Nevertheless, if they did exist, what do you think they would look like?

This activity will require you to get a couple of face painting sets from the appropriate retailer in your area or off the internet before the party. Be sure to get enough so that everyone will be able to get their faces painted.

When it’s time for the event, divide into two groups. The one group will be the makeup artists painting the faces of the other group. When they are done, it’s time for the makeup artists to take a chair and be made up themselves.

Have a prize ready for the most original creation.

Future Fashion

For this activity you will need lots of paper, glue, string, objects, foil, wire, etc.

Now, ever wonder what our fashion would look like in a couple of years? Do you think it will be totally weird and a lot different to what we wear now? Well, it’s time to find out!

Divide into groups and start designing your own futuristic clothes using the items mentioned. Once you have the idea on paper, it’s time to make it. Remember to design the clothes and make them according to the size of someone who has been chosen as a model for the activity.

Once done, have your own little space fashion show to exhibit your creations.

The Effects of Gravity

For this activity you will need a number of balloons all filled with water.

When it’s time for the activity to start, all participants should stand in a circle, about a foot away from each other. A balloon then has to be tossed in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction.

Now, as soon as the balloon has made three passes around the circle, it’s time to take a step back. If someone drops a balloon, that person is out (except if the toss was bad, in which case the person who threw it is out).

The winner of the game is the person who stays in the longest.

Food & Drink

In some cases people choose to shape their foods like objects from space. Think in terms of a spaceship-shaped cake or cupcakes that look like planets. In other instances people prefer to give their foods stellar names, like “Splattered Mars” for a pizza or “Split Sun” for a burger. If you think this will be appropriate for your party, then do so with foods that you and your friends love. Here are a couple of ideas:

  • Nuts

  • Chips

  • Sandwiches

  • Fajitas

  • Tacos

  • Hot dogs

  • Chicken wings

  • Crackers

  • Salads

  • Hamburgers

And when it comes to drinks, you can either browse the internet for recipes for non-alcoholic cocktails that are out of this world or just settle for lemonade, sodas, etc.
